In Berlin, randomly parked escooters occupy a large area on commuter roads, clogging sidewalks and threatening the safety of pedestrians. A recent investigation found that in some parts of the city, an illegally parked or abandoned electric scooter or bicycle is found every 77 metres. In order to solve the local escooter and bicycles, the Berlin government decided to allow electric scooters, bicycles, cargo bicycles and motorcycles to be parked in the parking lot for free. The new regulations were announced by Berlin’s Senate Transport Administration on Tuesday. The new regulations will come into effect on January 1, 2023.
According to the transport senator, once the plan to fully cover Berlin with Jelbi Station is confirmed, scooters will be banned from parking on sidewalks and must be parked in designated parking areas or parking lots. However, bicycles can still be parked. In addition, the Senate also amended the parking fee regulations. Parking fees are waived for bicycles, eBikes, cargo bikes, motorcycles, etc. parked in fixed areas. However, parking fees for cars have increased from 1-3 euros per hour to 2-4 euros (except for shared cars). This is the first increase in parking fees in Berlin in 20 years.
On the one hand, this initiative in Berlin can continue to encourage green travel by two-wheelers, and on the other hand, it is also conducive to ensuring the safety of pedestrians.
